For years the NC–CC dichotomy has framed Solar System formation, but new spectroscopic and sample insights now let us ask what the CC sub-classes—especially CM and CI—reveal about the timing and mechanisms of giant-planet growth and migration. What do these classes, examined in detail, tell us about distinct phases of formation and migration for the gas and ice giants ? Do the present-day radial distributions of CM- and CI-like asteroids encode their delivery pathways into the belt ? Do the data support a true trichotomy, rather than a simple dichotomy ? I’ll walk through two years of targeted N-body experiments designed to probe these questions and share the new (and surprising) results.
