The confirmation of over 6000 exoplanets, as well as their diversity, has revolutionized our understanding of planet formation and evolution. Nevertheless, our knowledge of how planets were formed is still extremely limited by a small number, 2, since there are only two systems confirmed to host young planets (i.e., protoplanets : PDS 70, and WISPIT 2). This 6000:2 difference calls for SAFFRON (Spiral Arm Formation FRom mOtion aNalysis), a multi-epoch high-contrast imaging survey using VLT’s SPHERE coronagraph. To guide the follow-up imaging of protoplanets, SAFFRON traces the change of protoplanetary disk structure over 7 years for 30 systems. This talk will focus on SAFFRON results ; specifically, (1) spiral motion summary, in dynamically mapping hidden protoplanets ; (2) shadowing statistics, in inferring inner disk evolution ; and (3) targeted ongoing planet imaging selected using SAFFRON with state-of-the-art platforms : JWST/NIRCam, Keck/NIRC2-Pol, Subaru/CHARIS, as well as CSST/CPIC (scheduled to launch in 2027).
